How Effective are Condoms by Jack Lynch - President
Condoms are the most effective known means of preventing pregnancy and also for prevention of Sexually Transmitted diseases. In the present times the incidence of HIV positive has risen to alarming proportions. The easiest and most cost effective method to wage a war against the dreaded virus is the proper use of a condom. Here, 'proper' is the most operative word because it just takes one tiny error on the part of the user to spill, in this case not the beans, but the semen that has been blocked from coming into direct contact with the body of the sexual partner. Such an error may cost dear not only in the form of an unwanted pregnancy but also a life threatening deadly virus.
The effectiveness of a condom depends squarely on proper use. The use of condoms is governed by some basic norms that if observed can ensure optimum effectiveness. The chances of being infected with HIV during unprotected sexual intercourse are indeed very high. Latex condoms are said to be very effective at blocking transmission of harmful viruses because the pores in latex condoms are too tiny to allow the virus to pass through. However, although latex condoms stand tall in the face of lab tests, they sometimes fail outside the labs because of insufficient adherence to correct methods of condom wear. Therefore, consistence and unfailing regularity in wearing a condom every time and as many times as you have sex is the key to keeping unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease at bay.
Although breakage and leakage of condoms can contribute to condom failure, more often than not it is incorrect and inconsistent use that may lead to ineffectiveness. Correct use would include use of a new condom for each act of intercourse; putting on a condom as soon erection occurs and before any kind of sexual, oral or anal contact; taking the time to perfect the art and technique of wearing a condom by holding the tip of the condom and unrolling it on to the erect penis after pinching the top to drive out any air and leaving some space to make room for the ejaculated semen; the condom should be rolled down to the very base of the penis. Adequate lubrication is just as important because lack of it can cause breakage and discomfort.
Lubricants contribute in fair measure to the effectiveness of condoms and poor knowledge of the condom in use, can lead to unwelcome accidents. Latex condoms are compatible only with water based lubricants as the oil based lubricants like petroleum jelly, cream or lotion can break down the latex. Polyurethane condoms on the other hand are unaffected by oil based lubricants. The condom wearer must withdraw from the partner soon after ejaculation, taking care that the condom is held in place so as not to allow the semen to leak. Consistent use on the other hand means using a condom from start to finish with each act of intercourse without fail.
With the demon of AIDS gaping at mankind, a lot of responsibility also rests with condom manufacturers to take care to see that the quality of condoms does not suffer and that they be made as break proof, as leak proof and as fool proof as possible. The rest is up to the users to make use of condoms correctly and consistently!
